TEP Statement on Transgender Homicide Victim in Memphis

The Shelby County Committee of TEP learned from local media that the Memphis Police Department has opened an investigation into the homicide of Rodney Whitaker, an African American, transgender woman, found on the 3200 block of Whitebrook Plaza in southeast Memphis.

According to media sources, investigators suspect foul play, but at this time, the medical examiner has not determined the cause of death.

We call on the Memphis Police Department to be expedient, yet thorough, in its investigation of this sensitive matter.  We also join those throughout Memphis and Tennessee in mourning and extending our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Rodney Whitaker.

This horrible incident serves as a reminder to our communities and elected officials of the necessity to add gender identity/expression to existing state and federal hate crime laws so that these terrible acts can be properly recorded, investigated and prosecuted as hate crimes.

Discrimination Survey

June 13, 2008 - To make our case for legislation prohibiting unfair treatment and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, TEP wants to hear about real reports of unfair treatment and discrimination from GLBT citizens. Reporting your story will help us persuade elected officials that protective legislation is needed in our state, counties, and cities.  [Complete the Survey]
